Is Laser Eye Correction Right for You?

If you have defective vision, then you’ve probably spent your whole life dealing with glasses, contact lenses and cleaning fluid. You’ve also probably heard about laser eye correction – the physical reshaping of the eye so that vision problems are corrected permanently. You may be considering laser eye correction and are wondering if laser eye correction is right for you.

Laser eye correction – or LASIK as it is known – is now a common treatment for the permanent correction of defective vision. It can correct both nearsightedness (myopia) and farsightedness (hyperopia). It does this by physically reshaping the cornea – the part of the eye through which light passes – and changing the light’s point of focus.

Laser Eye Correction Can Be a Permanent Solution for Most Vision Defects

Defective vision occurs when light focuses either too far in front of the retina, or too far behind the retina. This means that when the light hits the retina it is unfocused, creating a blurred image. Some people can see things close to them, but not things far away. For other people, it’s the other way around.

LASIK is a permanent solution for defective vision but cannot be used in all circumstances. For example, people with extremely bad vision are not suitable for LASIK treatment as the corneal reshaping would be too drastic. Alternate permanent solutions are available for such people though, such as artificial lenses.

Your LASIK process begins with a consultation, so your needs can be addressed and any questions you might have are answered. You can then arrange a date for your actual LASIK treatment.

LASIK Surgery is Quick and Painless and There’s No Need For a Hospital Stay

The process itself is completely painless. Your eyes are held open but are kept moist during the procedure so that you do not have occasion to feel the kind of discomfort usually eradicated by blinking. Both eyes can be treated within fifteen minutes.

Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis so you can go straight home afterwards. You may feel a little discomfort for a day or two but that will quickly pass. Your vision will be the best it has been for years, and will continue to improve over the next days and weeks.
