May is Healthy Vision Month

Approximately 37 million adults in America have age-related macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma. These conditions can result in visual impairment or full blindness. Fortunately, recent studies show that making healthy choices and getting regular eye exams can reduce an individual’s risk of vision loss.

In support of Healthy Vision Month this May, the American Academy of Ophthalmology encourages everyone to take charge of their eye health and preserve their sight by following some simple tips.

Doing A Little for Your Eyes Can Have A Big Impact

The first step to maintaining healthy eyes is having regular general eye exams. Getting a dilated eye exam is simple and painless. Despite the ease of an eye exam, many Americans forgo this easy preventative measure. The reason why many people do not make eye exams a priority is the same reason eye conditions are discovered too late.

Many eye diseases are not accompanied by obvious symptoms or warning signs. Therefore, most people think that their eyes are just fine because they feel fine. Even if your eyes appear healthy, you could have a condition that requires attention. Fortunately, a quick exam from a licensed eye doctor can easily uncover any signs of a problem with your eyes.

Certain Conditions Put You at Higher Risk for Eye Disease

Aging is not easy on our eyes. Simply getting older increases our risk for some eye conditions. There are other conditions that might also bring a greater risk of certain eye disease. Those who are overweight or obese are more likely to be diagnosed with a condition affecting their eyes. Also, a family history of eye disease and being of African American, Hispanic, or Native American descent can also impact the likelihood of eye disease.

Diabetes and high blood pressure are other health conditions that increase an individual’s risk of being diagnosed with eye disease. Individuals with diabetes are at an increased risk of experiencing diabetic retinopathy; which can lead to complete loss of vision.
