What is a cataract?<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n

A cataract is simply a clouding of the lens inside the eye. This clouding causes vision loss which cannot be rectified with glasses, contacts or LASIK surgery. Cataracts are often more prevalent in older individuals.<\/p>\n

What happens during cataract surgery?<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n

During cataract surgery, a cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. This helps to restore clearer vision and usually reduces your reliance on eyeglasses.<\/p>\n

Most modern cataract technology uses a high-frequency ultrasound device to break up the cataracts, which are then carefully removed from the eye using suction.<\/p>\n

Once the cloudy lens has been removed, the ophthalmologist places the clear lens behind the iris and pupil.<\/p>\n

How long should a cataract surgery take?<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n

A very simple cataract surgery can take as little as 15 minutes, but it\u2019s important to factor in extra time for surgery preparation as well as a brief post-operative evaluation to ensure you\u2019re clear on your cataract surgery recovery protocol once you leave the surgical center.<\/p>\n

What to expect after cataract surgery?<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n

You\u2019ll need to have someone else drive you home after cataract surgery and you shouldn\u2019t drive until you are cleared by your eye doctor.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll be prescribed a type of eye drop to use until the bottle is empty, which is typically 3 weeks after cataract surgery. You\u2019ll also want to wear a protective eye shield during sleep for roughly a week or so after surgery. Your eyes will be highly sensitive to bright light for a period of time after surgery, so you\u2019ll be given a special pair of sunglasses to use after surgery.<\/p>\n
