In most cases, cataracts develop slowly and may not significantly affect eyesight. However, they can quickly begin impacting vision and if left untreated, may even cause blindness. If cataracts are detected in the early stages, adequate measures can be taken to prevent worsening of the condition. For this reason, it is helpful to be aware of the symptoms associated with cataracts. If the following cataract symptoms are experienced, contact us to schedule an examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blurred Vision \u2013<\/strong>\nThe cloudy film that develops over the lens causes a gradual blurring of one\u2019s\nvision. This blurring of eyesight cannot be corrected by use of eyeglasses or\nartificial lenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Difficulty Seeing at\nNight \u2013<\/strong> Those with cataracts tend to have difficulty seeing things in low\nlight, especially during night time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sensitivity to Light \u2013<\/strong>\nDuring the very early stages of cataract development, many patients notice\ntheir eyes become increasingly sensitive to light, particularly harsh, bright\nlight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Halos around Light<\/strong>\n\u2013 The presence of the cloudy film on the lens sometimes causes diffraction of\nlight that enters the eye. This causes luminescent halos, often in different\ncolors, to appear when viewing sources of light. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Change in Color\nPerception \u2013<\/strong> As a cataract advances, the protein that forms the cloudy film\non the lens may turn yellow or brown. This may cause light entering the eye to\nbe perceived as an altered hue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Double Vision in One\nEye \u2013<\/strong> A common symptom of the early stages of a cataract is double vision\nin one eye. Not every cataract patient experiences this symptom, only those\nsuffering from a particular type of cataract. Also, several other eye\nconditions may cause double vision, but cataracts are amongst the few which\ncauses it only in one eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Frequently Needing Stronger Glasses \u2013<\/strong> If you find that you frequently need to increase your contact or glasses strength, this could be an indication that you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palmettoeyeandlaser.com\/cataract-surgery\/cataract-evaluation\/\">cataracts<\/a>. Rapidly changing eyes could be signs of other conditions as well. Whether it is cataracts or something else, it is important to see a doctor if your prescription needs are frequently changing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, having cataracts may interfere with your ability to carry out simple everyday activities and without treatment, cataracts may lead to permanent blindness.
