However, it\u2019s the leading cause of preventable blindness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.palmettoeyeandlaser.com\/specialty-eye-care\/glaucoma\/\">Glaucoma<\/a> is a group of eye conditions caused by abnormally high pressure that builds up in the eye, potentially damaging the optic nerve and resulting in vision loss. There are several different types of glaucoma, but the two main types are referred to as open-angle and angle-closure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Open-angle:<\/strong>\u00a0In this type,\u00a0the angle where the iris meets the cornea is open and wide, as it should be. It is the most common form of glaucoma, affecting about 90% of those with the disease. This type of glaucoma progresses slowly. The drainage canals of the eye clog at a slow rate, which increases eye pressure. Someone with open-angle glaucoma is likely to be symptom free.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Angle-closure:\u00a0<\/strong>This is a less common type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palmettoeyeandlaser.com\/specialty-eye-care\/glaucoma-treatment\/\">glaucoma<\/a> where the angle at which the iris meets the cornea is narrowed or closed. It is caused by a blockage of drainage canals, which increases intraocular pressure suddenly. A person with this form of glaucoma will experience sudden symptoms and immediate treatment is required.<\/p>\n<p>Other types of glaucoma include normal tension glaucoma, congenital glaucoma, secondary glaucoma, pigmentary glaucoma, pseudoexfoliative glaucoma, traumatic glaucoma and neovascular glaucoma.<\/p>\n<p>People with diabetes\u00a0are 40% more likely to develop glaucoma than those without the disease. Although persons with diabetes are at an increased risk of developing eye disease, you <em>can<\/em> prevent eye problems.<\/p>\n<p>Since eye complications are common with diabetes, it is very important that people with diabetes get their eyes examined on a regular basis. Damage to the eye can begin before diabetes is diagnosed. Therefore, being proactive is very important for preventing complications. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palmettoeyeandlaser.com\/about-us\/our-doctors\/\">Dr. Haguewood<\/a> recommends a dilated retinal exam at least once per year.
